Resources for School Staff
Daily Mile
The aim of The Daily Mile is to improve the physical, social, emotional and mental health and wellbeing of our children – regardless of age, ability or personal circumstances.
The Daily Mile is a social physical activity, with children running, jogging or wheeling - at their own pace – in the fresh air with friends. Children can occasionally walk to catch their breath, if necessary, but should aim to run, jog or wheel for the full 15 minutes. We want every child to have the opportunity to do The Daily Mile at primary school, and are now working to build The Daily Mile’s community with schools and the Leicester City Council Public Health team.

Health and Wellbeing Leads
The Designated Mental Health Lead (DMHL) programme was first mooted in the 2017 Green Paper – Transforming children and young people’s mental health provision – and in the subsequent consultation response from the Department for Education (DfE) and Department of Health and Social Care (2018).
Two core proposals were made:
- “To incentivise and support all schools and colleges to identify and train a designated senior lead for mental health with a new offer of training to help leads and staff to deliver whole-school approaches to promoting better mental health.”
- “To fund new Mental Health Support Teams, including supervision by NHS children and young people’s mental health staff, to provide specific extra capacity for early intervention and on-going help.”

Responsibilities of the Health and Wellbeing Lead are to:
- oversee the whole-school approach to wellbeing
- provide staff with the knowledge and confidence to understand and recognise signs of poor mental health in pupils and know where to go with any concerns
- oversee the provision the school gives to pupils with mental health difficulties
- manage how staff are supported with their own mental health
- be proactive in developing links with specialist services, referring pupils if they need to.
Further resources and information to support the role is available from Optimus Education here.
Developing Fundamental Movement Skills
We have developed a number of resources for school staff and parents to engage young people in fun activities which develop their core movement skills which underpins development of finer skills and enables children to develop a love of movement and being active. Please access the Fundamental Activity Cards here.
